Corny Four Quartet

The Corny Four Quartet was a group within a group. When Smokey Ward was at WPFB in Middletown from 1949 -1954, his group of entertainers was called the Barrelhead Gang. When it was time for a gospel song, Smokey would call the Corny Four Quartet around the microphone to sing the hymn or sacred song. The quartet was far from being corny however. It consisted of Smokey, Bobby and Sonny Osborne, and either Jimmy Martin or Fairley Holden, depending on which one was in the Barrelhead Gang at the time. They never recorded but they did perform at all of the personal appearances. They sang “Gone Home”, “A Beautiful Life”, and many of the songs of Shannon Grayson who Smokey admired.
