CREMER, BETH JANE “LITTLE ELLER” also “ELLA” (1920-1988)

Born In Detroit, Michigan, and married to Smokey Ward at the time he was at WPFB in Middletown, Little Eller was a 6’4” tall comedienne who wore braids and little girl dresses to make her look even taller. She had been in the Broadway show Hellzapoppin and had worked on the WLS Barn Dance in Chicago with Ted Morse, who used the stage name “Otto.” Their act was built around her tall and his short stature. She left Chicago and went to the Renfro Valley Barn Dance, where she did the same kind of act with Shorty Hobbs. While at Renfro Valley, she married Smokey Ward; in addition to performing, they operated the Bellyachers Restaurant in the area. They later came to WPFB in Middletown and still later to WNAX in Yankton, South Dakota. She was on Pee Wee King’s ABC TV series in 1955 and on the Ozark Jubilee.
