Jewell Mountain Grass

Formed in the early 1980s, Jewell Mountain Grass was popular around the Dayton area appearing on the WYSO Country Jamboree and at other local venues. They recorded two LPs on the Old Homestead label, Jewell Mountain Grass in 1981 and Heart Felt Bluegrass in 1983. Members included Clarence Kelly, who did the lead vocals and played lead guitar; Earl Hale, who sang baritone and bass and played rhythm guitar; Tim Hale, who did the tenor vocals and played banjo; Frank Broyles on mandolin; and Johnny Carpenter who played bass. Clarence Kelly went on to front his own band, Nu Cut Road, and Tim Hale played banjo with Jett’s Creek and other bands before his untimely death in 2015.
