McKEE, JOHNNIE

Johnnie McKee was a fiddle player who played the Dayton bars in the early 1950s along with the Brock Brothers, Red Allen, Noah Crase, and Frank Wakefield. He was one of Red Allen’s Blue Mountain Boys, who toured Kentucky and Chicago in 1952 or 1953. In 1953, he recorded with Red Allen on Kentucky Records in Cincinnati. Although the records were issued under Red’s name, Johnnie McKee sang lead on six of the seven songs. He moved to Chicago but apparently was back in Dayton playing shows in the late 1950s. He eventually moved to California and to Greenville, Tennessee, in 2008.
